“Young people should not pick up bad habits from society. Do not be afraid to face any hardship. It doesn’t mater even if you are not contributing to the community so long as you do nothing to its detriment.”

Shu Wah LAU
Retired Chinese Arts & Craft Shop Owner

Origin - Hong Kong

Mr. Shu Wah LAU came to the UK to work just before his sixteenth birthday. He came to financially aid his father, who was the sole provider for six children. At first he worked at an airport tearoom but, as an underage worker he often had to make himself invisible and avoid attention whenever there were no customers to be served. For decades he worked in restaurants but eventually with a combination of chance and luck he set up an Art and Crafts Stationery shop in Chinatown. Reliving those memories of working in Chinatown, Lau mentioned that he began his business by displaying the products on a table by the street. He was proud of himself for his bravery in doing this. While talking about Chinatown, it is obvious how emotionally attached Lau is to Chinatown. According to him, a week or two’s absence from Chinatown brings him feelings of discomfort and so he feels the need to visit Chinatown on a regular basis. Most of all, he is the happiest witnessing the transformation of Chinatown over the decades, seeing it becoming the bustling centre it is today.
