“We live in the UK. Alongside British culture we need to keep our Chinese culture. Chinese and Britain have to be friends with one another. “

Chun CHAN
Retired Restaurant Business & Hair Salon Owner

Origin - Mainland China

Mr. Chun Chan left his home town, Yeung Chau, when he was a child. From Yeung Chau to Shanghai, from Shanghai to Hong Kong, and from Hong Kong he came over to the UK in 1966. He worked as a hairdresser and later on ran his own restaurant. In the early years Chan experienced discrimination and life was tough at that time. However, he hasn’t thought of going back since the moment he landed at Heathrow airport all those years ago. With much persistence and hard work, Mr. Chun Chan finally got into the restaurant business. Life became better. Back when he was a hairdresser, Chan met with the chef editor of HOng Kong’s ‘Singtao Daily’, Ms. Wu. He suggested she should run a Chinese newspaper in the UK. He actually helped to find the office space for the newspaper later on and became the middle man in the founding of Singtao Daily in the UK.
